The Tottenham defender scored twice as Tottenham prolonged their unbeaten run on the road in the Premier League and handed the Toffees their initial loss at their new home.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their last five matches at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed their historic home behind after more than a century at the conclusion of last season.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven pounced on two occasions from corners in the opening 45 minutes to place their strong form at jeopardy, and they were failed to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - nodded in a final goal to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien thought he had levelled the tally five minutes after the defender's opener, directing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, missed a number of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of fine saves to guarantee Tottenham went five matches on the road without defeat in the Premier League.

But the VAR intervened, instructing Craig Pawson to review the score on the pitchside monitor and the referee ruled that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

This victory moves the manager's side up to third in the Premier League, a handful of points off local foes and table-toppers Arsenal.

Everton remain in 14th position and sit six points clear of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender excels in duties at both ends of the field

After a drab midweek display in the Champions League against the French side, where they mustered a only attempts on goal, the manager chose the French striker up front instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The summer signing was unable to make much of an impact before being replaced for Richarlison after an hour on the field, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Defender Van de Ven converted into an offensive threat to be feared.

Spurs' first goal came from a well-worked set-piece play, with the midfielder heading the ball back across the face of goal for an unmarked the defender to score.

And the captain - stepping up as skipper in Cristian Romero's absence - notched his second in first-half stoppage time as he rose above the England keeper to head home.

Van de Ven was equally outstanding in defence, combining well with Kevin Danso as the pair handled superbly with the 34 crosses sent their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Toffees missing finishing touch

Everton's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the novelty may have faded somewhat and supporters headed to the gates after Sarr's third for Spurs.

The break in the team's unbeaten home run won't be a major concern for the manager, but their striker situation are.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Everton's pair of established centre-forwards - had scored only a single goal between them before Sunday's match.

And they were unable to contribute to that miserable record on a wet and gloomy evening on Merseyside.

The striker's form was epitomized when he opted to overhead kick a clear chance from close range, even with having space and opportunity to reposition for a simpler attempt that would have challenged the keeper.

Barry, too, failed to make an impact after replacing Beto in the second half.

It wasn't for a shortage of chance. The majority of the home side's offensive moves came through the winger and Ndiaye, who tirelessly whipped dangerous balls into the Spurs box.
